The strap that started it all...the re-visioned BUND in Shell Cordovan

My fascination for wristwatches and knives started when I was 10 years old.

Growing up in Germany, I was frequently exposed to fine cutlery and steel from Solingen, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland, which constantly fed my appreciation for the aesthetic appeal and stealth power that a fine knife represents. The basic design philosophy of “form following function”, in my opinion, is expressed in its purest form in a knife.

As a result, I’ve always been fascinated with things that are well made, and that also incorporate a great attention to detail and choice of materials, especially fine wristwatches and knives.

My passion for high-end knives and wristwatches stayed with me throughout my teenage years, and would subsequently impact my profession as a photographer and designer.

As my fascination for watches and knives grew, I also kept feeling that a watch was not complete unless it had the right strap. This would always lead to lengthy process of finding the perfect strap. Also, I always ran into the same problem with most of the straps I liked; the majority of them were also very stiff and quite uncomfortable, and needed a long break-in period until they were finally comfortable on the wrist.

When it came to folding knives, my searches for well-made sheaths came up even emptier and more frustrating!

Why would you invest thousands of dollars in a beautiful collection of knives (or a single knife!) but not carry and protect it in a sheath of equal beauty and quality in material and finish?

As with wristwatches, I strongly feel that the right strap makes the watch.

You simply will not enjoy your watch, if you have an uncomfortable or unattractive watch strap. The balance between the watch and the strap has to be just right, and it has to feel and look just as balanced on your wrist!

It took me 25 years to come to this simple conclusion:  I had to make them myself.

I turned my office into a studio, and started playing with materials, tools, and sewing…
