Horween Shell Cordovan is the finest leather in the world; nothing else even comes close or compares to it. Authentic Shell is made from a particular part of the horse and is produced in very limited numbers by only one tannery in the US!
I was introduced to Shell Cordovan about 7 years ago, and was completely blown away when I tried on a watch strap made of this exquisite leather for the first time.
Not many people have heard of Shell Cordovan, since it is used primarily for high-end shoes and watch straps. Shell cordovan often gets mistaken for "Cordovan " leather, which actually refers to a specific "color" of leather (a deep burgundy) but has nothing to do with genuine Shell Cordovan leather!
Because of the extremely limited availability of Shell Cordovan and the small size of each hide, which is about 1 sq ft, Shell Cordovan is also among the most expensive leathers in the world.
What is so special about Shell Cordovan?
The main characteristic of Shell Cordovan is the unmistakable feel of the material, which is almost rubber-like; it is extremely pliable and unbelievably smooth.
Shell Cordovan is also the densest leather in the world, making it one of the most water resistant leathers. It is non-porous, and does not "frizz" out on the bottom, which is a key factor in the aging process.
The tanning process of Shell Cordovan takes six months and as a result Shell Cordovan will not dry and crack over time. It actually improves during its aging process, and retains its distinctive feel and quality.
Shell Cordovan has virtually no break in period; when you touch and feel Shell Cordovan for the first time, you’ll get the sense that it has been worn in for some time and/or broken in. It’s that smooth and soft. This is a key factor with watch straps, as most leather straps are not very comfortable on the wrist for the first few weeks.
Oh... and there's that rich smell; just like fresh ground coffee. Shell Cordovan has an unmistakably rich aroma which says " This is how leather should smell."
